I know a read somewhere that a member figured out how to connect INPA to the left and right DME's. I searched with the forum and google but I can't find it! I bet it is buried in a different thread. My car is fine as of now but when the day comes and it will with 12 cylinders to keep happy I will need INPA. I hope that member is still here? Something about putting the correct files in a certain folder.

I had to figure this out to diagnose a melted EKAT module among other things on a MY 2000 750il (production 12/99), so hopefully this will help someone else.
Under your INPA\CFGDAT directory, open up E38.ENG in a text editor and make sure you have these lines uncommented (remove the leading semicolon character) or add them manually under the ROOT_MOTOR section:

I found this worked successfully on a laptop with a true serial port using an ADS cable, but only while the DMEs were installed in the car. It did not work with a USB to serial EDIABAS adapter in either OBD or ADS mode, nor did it work with the ADS cable on a bench wiring setup. Without troubleshooting further, my hunch is that the IPO script file interrogates another module in the car that's accessible through the ADS port. WinKFP works perfectly fine with an EDIABAS cable for flashing either DME (with a solid 14V power supply), so I know the DMEs are accessible.

Just to follow up I changed the lines to uncommented and now I can get into both DME's. It's in German but that can be translated. Another thumbs to the forum!
