Hi. i just grabbed a 1995 540i yesterday with the 6 speed manual trans. The dude i got it from got it from some one who owed him a little cash and he was going to part it out. i told him no way. He knew nothing about BMW's or the rarity of the car.
I have a file of maintenance records. probably 20k in receipts just from 2010-2013.
The first and second owners loved this car and cared for it greatly, but now it's been sitting for a minute and needs some love for sure.
Car is from KY so no rust except for a few door bottoms.
It is black on black and has 259k on it.
The clown sold the cats off of it, so there's no cats; that's gonna be the first issue i plan to tackle.
Good score. A fat stack of receipts is like gold when buying one of these.

Yeah lol i need to upload some pics. i'm trying to restore it as much as i can. that's the plan. i've already cleaned the interior professionally. it wasnt horrible but certainly wasnt clean. the exterior needs a couple more trim pieces, three of the 4 doors have rust, and there's a weird issue going on with the paint in a few places, looks faded but im pretty sure it can be wet sanded or buffed back to new.
I have found the original window sticker in good shape..$52k. it has every option available that year for it including the M sport suspension and sport heated seats.

The exhaust needs to be replaced. so im gonna have it towed somewhere to have them work out a new system for it.

Gonna put in new fluids, coils and plugs, maybe VC gaskets, it needs rear suspension work.
Runs like new, but i plan to spend some money replacing everything i can.

Custom exhaust? May I suggest... X-pipe, dual electric cutouts, and factory resonators.
Don't bother with coils unless they're actually bad (they rarely are; and if it "runs like new", they aren't). Plugs should be NGK BKR6EK.
Rear suspension work? Do you want a stock ride, an OE performance upgrade/comfort downgrade, or aftermarket same?
Congrats on the 540i6! They are getting harder to find now.

Doubled my money. No one else was gonna give me $4500 cash + a 1996 750 he had sitting around..essentially i got like 6k for it. it was too good to pass up. car wasnt worth 6k, lol.
it was a nice e34, but needed a crap load of work. he was def in over his head a bit, but he has money and loves these cars. he is also paying a shop to do all the work.
it needed full front and rear suspension inc. struts, driveshaft guibo/csb/trans mounts, all fluids, it had a 1 cyl misfire, window regs, trim pieces, all gaskets in the motor, prob trans seals and fluid, trunk struts, brakes front and rear, etc...the list goes on and on. it drove pretty bad cause of the work it needed.
On a positive note- i saved this car from the crusher and gave it a good home. i was also able to buff the paint out and it looked like new.
Sounds like you passed it on to somebody with the means and motivation to not only keep it out of the crusher, but bring it back to life. No complaint from me.
