    M20 chip installation requirements.

I’d like to install a sssquid chip in my stock E30’s engine. Besides the chip, what will I need to install and what should I look at prior to ensure a proper installation? I believe heavier injectors are mandatory? Thanks

i don't know the particulars about the chip you are talking about it but installing a chip is very easy. locate your ecu, above your glove box and behind hte black plastic cover. remove it and unplug the harness (after you unhook your battery). undo the screws on the cover and you might have to bend some little tabs back, not 100% sure if i remember the tabs from jeeps or e30s. but then you split the cover of the back and it should be right there. the old chip has a little groove on one side, like a small indention. your new chip does also. make sure to put it in the same way as the old one and hten close it all up and bolt it back in the car.

its about half an hour to do

Nothing is mandatory, but there are many options. I'd go to their ordering page and poke around. https://sssquid.com/v3/product-tag/e30-2/

what always made an enjoyable mod was a chip, a 027 afm from an 80s to very early 90s 535 or 735, and injectors from a small ford v8 vehicle. to me, that always made the car feel more fun. whether it really did anything, no idea because there were no dynos in town back then but it made me feel like it was more fun.

if you look for an 027 afm, its the last numbers on the black cover, of the part number. and it will require you to stretch your boot onto it by warming hte boot with a har dryer or something. then you have to pop the black plastic cover off to expose the tensioner spring and wiper arm and adjust the tensioner. its like a clock spring and sits in little teeth. put a white dot on the tooth "V" where it sits as soon as you open the box so you don't loose your starting point and loosen the spring 3-5 teeth and see how the car runs. since its set up for a larger motor, its set tighter then our small six can pull properly. you need to release the tension to allow it to move the arm properly so the engine can let in the right amount of air and adjust fuel properly. you will ahve to test drive it a few times to get it set right but once you get it, you will be good from then on

superj I just discovered this afm mod^^ when I was looking at the sssquid website last night that richardodn posted and saw the tune for M20 with M30 AFM. I went down the forum rabbit hole last night reading up on it, but your post here summarizes it better and more succinctly than anything I read. Thanks! I'll have to watch the yards for something where I can scavenge one of those AFMs.

On the injector side, are there any bounds on the year of Ford that you can get injectors from that will work?

How do you search on that archive e30tech? Man, the first time I ever saw e30tech, it had maybe 100 members and I thought it wasn't going to make it. I ended up joining and used to be able to get a hold of Chris, the owner. Once he moved on to another area of the employer we share, he stopped taking care of e30tech and let it die.

I just googled e30tech, it looks like someone just scraped the old forum and put it up under this new url. Search wasn't working for me either.

you can use google to search the forum, for example:

    m30 afm conversion site:http://www.e30techarchive.com

I've found a lot of times that method works better than forums' own search.

Sorry OP to high jack your thread!

yes you can target google to only return results for a specific site by following your search terms with:

    site:sitetosearch.com

then only results from that website will come back.
