    Where to begin...

    Hello,

Im helping out my buddy with his 02' 745i.
Currently it will not start and when cranking there is a fairly disturbing noise from the engine bay.

I went to pull some codes and got all the codes!

I feel like there could be a power supply issue affecting both cam exhaust banks but I'd like to stare blankly at a wiring diagram before progressing with that theory.

Another thing I noticed was that after a few power cycles the "D" indicator on the dash would blink, but I'm not sure if that factors in here.

If anyone has any advice and a solid link to a wiring diagram for this vehicle I would greatly appreciate it.

    Much thanks!

I think you've got bigger issues than wiring. Probably mechanical issues based on the multiple misfires and VANOS codes.

    Thanks for the reply!

I have little doubt that the issue is most likely mechanical. If you had to take a crack at it where would you start?

Assuming that the timing chain is still functional do you think the cam actuators for Vanos have failed electronically? Or is it possible that they are being physically inhibited?

Maybe the vehicle has jumped time or the chain has become damaged?

I greatly appreciate your assistance! Like I said before, I'm helping out a buddy and trying to get some experience working with newer bimmers.

    Thanks again!

I would be taking off the valve covers and having a look. I’d check the timing as well. You could eyeball it see if it looks close, but actually setting it requires the special tools.

Make sure you have a good, properly charged battery, good cables, and that all the grounds are good. These things demand good consistent current and proper voltage because of all the ECUs scattered throughout the car otherwise things freak-out throwing what are really bogus codes. I call mine the IT Crowd car. If something isn't working properly, you just turn it off then turn it back on. If this was my car, I'd probably pull the power for the whole car, then power it all back up and see what happens. Or I'd used ISTA and clear all the codes rather than using a more generic scanner.
