Does anyone let their turbo cool down or have a reason not to? I'm used to a Detroit 60 and having to cool it after running but imagine that these M57 engines dont need it. 2010 X5 35 diesel, thanks
You are correct. They really don't need it. BMW turbos are cooled by oil and coolant. I believe the old school thinking of cooling down the turbo was from turbos that were cooled/lubed by oil only.

When started turbos need a few minutes to get the lube to the turbo bearings and when shut off idle the engine to bring cooler fluids to the turbo be for shut down
Years ago my boss had an 80s Mercedes turbo diesel and they recommended letting the car idle for a minute before turning it off. Not so much to let them cool off but to let the turbos slow down. Once the car is turned off the oil stops flowing to the turbo bearings. Improved turbo design and greatly improved engine oils have made this step uneccesary. Let's face it. When you spend $75,000 on a car you certainly dont expect to be required to think about all th use extra steps.
