740il, no crank and not starting

I have a 740il that won’t crank or start, any ideas? It was parked for a long time, the dash turns on and all the electrics work.

Just because the electronics work doesn’t mean you have enough juice to start. See what the V is of the battery. If you don’t have a multimeter, use Test 9 in the dash.
    Report that result back.

The battery is brand new, therefore not an issue with the power.

Test it to be sure. I have seen “off the rack new” batteries be low.

Then you get the fun of (no particular order):
    -checking the rolling code alignment
    -checking engine grounds
    -checking sensor functionality
    -conducting a mechanics starter tap
    -et al

    Do you have any codes?

Check the wiring to the DDE, especially the connections. There have been issues with that.

I am not sure about the immobilizer codes but could be something related to this:

Then I have to turn it over to better experts than myself.

The starter is working fine, therefore narrowing it down to EWS.

Next steps will be to try and bypass the EWS or find someone with INPA who can resync.

Anybody know of any tech guys around Hampshire or Dorset that have INPA or another suitable software that can help?

So it does crank but wont fire up? You said your starter is fine. That is why I ask. Can you show us a video before you get too carried away. Often it is very simple.

I managed to get INPA software and have an error that says ECU rejected. Any idea how to fix this? Or reprogramme it?

How did you get here? I mean did the car work for YOU - it was parked and then it didn't run again - or you bought it in this state. The background will help!

I bought the car in this state from a trader. He said that the original owner left it parked up for a few months and then when he tried to start it up again it never worked. It’s been parked up for 10 years. I want to get it working and then restore it.

It sounds more like the car failed and then a lot of parts were swapped until the previous owner gave up. The error messages point towards the DME being faulty or the wrong one.

    Thanks Tim.

I’m going to give it to a specialist garage who said they will investigate further and then replace the DME if required with a new one from the dealer and programme it.

There is a shop in Kent, Washington (USA) that specializes in DME modifications. I had an issue with a 1995 740i and he took the chip from the old one and put it into a rebuilt one which solved my issue. It had corroded from water getting into the area which is very common in the E38. It was about $100 I think. I know the shop is a long way away from you but it might be worth a try. I forget the name of the shop but I know be has a facebook page and prefers tHat form of communication. I forget the name of the shop but will research it if you want to go this direction.
