I'm replacing the window regulators on a 2004 X3.
Following these instructions:

My question - do I need to put the door panel back on (or at least connect the airbag) in order to avoid a permanent airbag light?
Or can I hook the power back up, leave the door panel off, possibly get an airbag light, test the window, and then put the door panel back on once I know everything works and the airbag light will clear itself when the door panel is back?
Thank you!
When I had the airbag light and functioning problem.
Once I discovered the true problem...First I made sure I waited 30min or so after I disconnected the battery BEFORE I started any dismantling. When I got to the panel the airbag (using a pocket flat head) connector had to be lifted from the front and the back... Believe it or not there is a proper way of (search newtis) disconnecting... If broken... the tab (called squib) will not allow the airbag to function and a dash light will illuminate... this broken tab is ofterned over looked and leads to misinterpreting the error.

Thank you for the heads up.. sounds like a fun one.
Anytime I've replaced window regulators, I've used an external 12V power supply to run the mechanism up/down when things are still apart. If you have one, it makes the job easy without the fear for the airbag light.
