So I had issues last week with my BMW M3 2006 SMG not shifting with the yellow cog wheel of death coming on. Towed to shop and mechanic says may be either a bad gear position switch or gear actuator. Also learned it needs subframe work. Is it worth spending the money to repair or better to junk out and get another car? Never had these issues until recently as car has been solid for 10 years that I've owned it and I never track or race the car and do regular maintenance at top BMW shops. Also if I do keep the car should I spend the cash to swap out the SMG to manual?
That's a tough call, for if the car has sentimental value, then fix it. But I wonder what are the codes that were pulled from the SMG?
You can convert an SMG back to a regular 6-speed, just need a machine shop to do the work on the bell housing.
