    Subframe issues

I'm considering buying a 2002 E46 convertible. I know there are subframe issues. I plan on having it checked for cracks before I buy it. My question is are subframe cracks only a matter of time, or do some of the cars simply not have this problem. And does it really depend on how they are driven?

    1. Only a matter of time.
    2. Can't really inspect it properly without dropping subframe to see underneath mount points.
    3. Driving style matters but only how quick it fails.
    4. I would add the cost of the job into your purchase budget.

There was a requirement to have BMW check for any and all subframe cracks on the M3's, and to fix any that were found. I am not sure if they are still going to do it today, but if you run the VIN with a local BMW dealership, they can tell you if it was done and if there are any outstanding recalls too.

    2003 M3 Convertible,
My understanding is the convertibles are not AS prone to it due to some extra materials in the area on the verts (for support), but it still happens. Mine is due for a subframe reinforcement albeit the cracks are small currently. I know another E46 M in my area who has had hairline cracks for years on his and they havent gotten worse.....

I just took my 03 Vert for the job. The mechanic that looked at it said he could not see anything but it was probably there anyway and sent me to a race shop that does these a lot... As predicted, there was one little crack ont he driver side mount, the guy said they ALL have at least that one...
