So, I bought my 2002 530i a few weeks ago, and it is really weird that the oil dipstick gets stuck (really gets hung up) and doesn't want to come out at about 3-4 inches out.
Really strange. Is this a thing?
Some of the dipstick's plastic had broken off at the end. So I bought a new dipstick. And it still sticks after about 3-4 inches out.
What is up with this?
I wonder if the dipstick pipe is bent or mangled. Perhaps it was taken out and really hamfisted back in..
Maybe Part of old dipstick broke off and jambed sideways in the pipe?
Maybe some dibris is blocking the pipe?
I would probably try to pull the pipe out to inspect or snake a camera down the tube next time you do a oil change after draining....

Pull the pipe and snag one from a scrap yard if part of an old dipstick is broken off in it.

I’d want to know where the broken bits are.
Can’t really do any harm if they got stuck in the tube or migrated to the pan. The screen in the oil pick up tube would prevent take up by the pump. Would be nice to locate so it doesn’t later block something but would likely drain out with oil change.

Look at the dipstick tube - it could just be bent or have a kink from some clumsy mechanical work.

I see I have an aftermarket oil catch can somehow incorporated into the CCV system. I need to look and see if some ham-fisted mechanic mucked up the oil dipstick when installing. The use of zip ties to secure the oil catch can is not a good indicator. Pics to come.
BTW this was a WI car, so surely problems with the cold weather.

So maybe (I'm told) I'm not the only one with this problem. A poorly designed dipstick type. We will see. And the catch can? Pics as promised. I'm not sold, BTW, on the old school PCV valve directly to the intake manifold either. But I'm in Austin TX. We got snow in 1984.
