Just spoke to the local dealer and a replacement key and key fob is $400. He stated that the key and fob were one piece. On all my e36 M3 in the past the key fob was Separate from the key. He stared that it was for my car hit that it was hard to tell what the functions of the fob were given how old the car is. He mentioned that the parts manuals don’t do much to support these older cars.
My question is whether anyone has seen a key/key fob all in one for our cars or is he mistaken?
what is my best option for buying and programming a key fob for my car? Anyone had any luck with this?
I pulled my factory alarm with harness from one car and my fob came from another. From everything I have read it depends on what alarm version it has in it. There are 2 button and 3 button remotes that don't interchange. The programming for the 2 button took all of 15 seconds.
I see a few second hand on ebay, it just depends on the alarm version.

If you need an alarm for the 2 button remote, I have one I can send out for the cost of shipping. Just don't have a harness for it.

Thanks. That gives me everything I need to know. Case closed. I just assume that the vendor quoted fob is an original 2/3 button style rather than a key/fob in one like he described. Thanks for the link.
There’s a source for a new fob for around $50 online. I ordered one and it works fine. I’ll look for the vendor link when I get home.
