Car: 2001 E39, 540i, Automatic transmission ZF 5HP24, 193 K miles
My automatic transmission is having a sporadic error that is bugging me, over the last few months.
On cold starts, after driving about half a mile, the car stalls and the tranny goes into "fail-safe-mode". I safely pull over, turn off the engine for a minute, restart it, and then all is fine.
INPA scan shows:
Error code 49 : Symptom Gangueberwachung ( translation: Symptom gait monitoring)).
Error code 52: Gangueberwachung 2 (translation: Aisle monitoring 2)
In the last occurrence, I also got (error 59: Locking speed)
After clearing the errors, all is well until next month or so. Transmission fluid (drain and refill) replaced early this summer. I made sure the battery is fully recharged, and the alternator is good.
Do you think it is a fluid level problem ? or is it the tranny speed sensors ?? or are these the early warning signs of a failing tranny ???
One of the early warnings was the 2nd to 1st bump or the failure to go into reverse. I have not heard of similar symptoms to yours as a common fault but I am new to this car.
