    Tire size

Just bought a 2001 330i. The last owner put M wheels on it. Here’s my question. The front has a 245/40 17 and a 225/45 17. The back has the same two tires on opposite sides. I figure I need to have the same tires put on the same axle. But which go in front and which go in back? Thanks.

By chance what spare do you have in the trunk?

LOL!!! That seems like a weird mix of what should be 7.5” (225/45) wheels front and 8.5” (245/40) wheels rear with 7.5” (225/45) in the trunk as the spare.

That's funny, when I got my 330CiC last year I had the same situation, except they actually put 2 of the tires on the wrong wheels; they had 245 tires on the narrow front wheel and a 225 on the wide rear wheel!

I had a shop do the exact same thing to my old 2001 330Ci!! Talk about weird handling.

    Aloha,
Looks like there are people actually reading this post, so I'll ask my question here. Since no one seems to make the 225 40 17 anymore, what size would one use to replace the it? Is it possible to run 225 45 all the way around? There's almost 4 inches difference in circumference between the 2 sizes. That seems a bit much.

Stock rims on a 99 Z3, and new wheels is not an option.

    Mahalo for any thoughts.

What model Z3 do you have and what wheels? What width wheels?

    (Select wheels from the link)
Can you identify a wheel style?

I think the factory tire sizing is listed on a decal on the drivers “B” pilar

Sorry, I should know better. It's a 2.8 and as for the style of the wheels, I guess that they're whatever came on it from the factory. Nothing special, and I have seen the same wheels on quite a few Z3's over the years.

Wheel diameters, widths, and offsets/ET values.

Without more information I can only say this - 225/45R17 tires on 7” or 7.5” wheels on all four corners is acceptable with factory wheel offsets/ET values.
235/40R17 tires on 7.5” wheels all around. 245/40R17 tires on 8.5” wheel again with factory wheel offsets/ET values but you potentially have clearance issues in front and may need spacers and or rolled fenders.

    225/45R17 front on 7.5” wheels
    245/40R17 rear on 8.5” wheels
    is another acceptable configuration.

    Tnx for the info.

The vehicle calls for 225 40 17 in the rear with 225 45 17 in the front. That is where the problem lies because it appears that the 225 40 17 is no longer manufactured.

Can you post a photo of the decal on the drivers “B” pillar?
It is very unlikely BMW specified tire sizes that created that large of difference front-to-rear.

Unfortunately, there's only a sticker stating the correct PSI in the door jam. I'm having a hard time believing this size difference as well, but those tire sizes are listed in the manual, and everywhere that I search online. And, the tires on the vehicle now are those same sizes.

So what wheels do you have and what width are they?
I took a quick look at Tire Rack and it appears you should be running

    225/45R17 front on 7.5” wheels
    245/40R17 rear on 8.5” wheels

What 225/40? It calls for a 225/45 in the front and a 245/40 in the back. Spare should be a 225/45 since it has to be able to go on the front or back.
