This may have been discussed before, but I'm lazy so I'll ask if anyone have done or looked into retrofitting the later top down (M30B35) oil filter cannister in lieu of the earlier bottom up (M30B34) ccannister?
Thanks in advance

George, I think the real estate might be an issue. I have seen some with the mod and there is a lot to move around. The other issue is you have to add a check valve and not sure it is built in or not. Oil will drain from the canister with the upright one. I know it will be easier to do filter changes with the upright one but not sure overall if it that's simple. The early E34 535i models had them and that's what you could use to do the mod but the engine compartment was laid out a little different.

Why?? Just easier to use one of my spin on filter adapters and be done with any mess forever

Hey Bert,
Speaking of your spin on filter adapters, do you have one for a top down filter? I read a post about your engine debacle. That's a tough one a swallow.
Cheers,

George I bought the M30B35 oil filter housing (still in the garage someplace) with the intention of doing the same swap that you're asking about on the 84 635CSi and as Jody says there just wasn't enough room in the right places for it to fit. I have subsequently installed Bert's adapter and that works just fine.

I am thinking of doing another run of these adapters I will be able to do them to replace a 4" can or a 3.5" can either bolted from the top or the bottom. They will be $150 shipped or if 3 guys step up, I will do $135 shippedComplete filter unit.jpgfilter parts (2).jpg

James, when you say " I bought the M30B35 oil filter housing... I am assuming you mean an M30B35 housing from an E34 or E32 B35 engine. My straight 635CSi '88 B35 engine still uses the bottom up style housing which means for E24s, those style housings are all meant for the E24 engine compartments. Bert's solution seems most viable to keep the bottom up with spin on.

Well, considering I was diagnosed with Bell's Palsey last week, I'm doing ok. What brand filter are you using with your spin on adapter? I'm real picky about oil filters. Thanks
