Hello,
Have an 06 650i that I've had for about 5 years and I really like this car.
During the rainy season, it stared to have problems and I found a badly shorted Crank position sensor.
replaced but ran rough. After chasing down codes on the timing, camshaft sensors, etc. I finally looked at the DME.
The computer compartment was flooded due to leaves blocking the drain!
I opened up the DMW and found EXTENSIVE water damage. IT had been sitting halfway in water for a while. At least I know the root cause.
I know that I can't just drop in a DME since the VIN is coded and locked and it has to match the CAS and keys.
Has anyone done the complete swap? If so, will the car pass smog since the VINs won't match the car?
Any advice would be appreciated
Update:
I was able to get the DME completely replaced and the car is now able to start.
Since the original DME was damaged beyond repair and not readable to be cloned, I needed a 'virgin' DME.
I found a shop in Rome, GA (not the one in Italy) and he basically had me purchase a used DME with the exact model number and shipped it to him.
Found a DME on eBay for under $50 and had it shipped directly to the shop. There he wiped the computer and programmed it with my VIN.
When I got it back, I installed it and had to re-sync the CAS with the new DME. I had some trouble finding the procedure in ISTA-D and reached out to the shop. The owner called me and walked me through the process.
WOW - it started up and the VINs all matched up!
He only charged me $150 to program the new DME and that included shipping.
This was a fantastic alternative for me as the dealer wants about $1,800 for a new DME and then the programming costs.
That's a brilliant outcome - and thanks for letting us know!
