We have an 82 E23 that runs beautifully for about 45 minutes then misfires, chugs and sputters. After 15 minutes of tinkering....it runs beautifully again.
Any ideas?
Moved to E23 forum.
Did you already test coolant temperature sensor and air temp sensor? Because these feed the engine control unit.

What kind of tinkering are you doing?

We have not. How would you test those... or do we just replace them?
You should have a coolant temp sensor, a thermo time switch, and I believe one other sensor that may sense coolant temp to adjust fueling. All right up on the thermostat housing. That’s where I would look first.
P.S. your engine is the same as some early e28 cars. There may be more mechanical info on fixings over on mye28 you can dig through

Thanks... we'll look into that
