2000 323i auto transmission issues and leak

    Hi all,

2000 323i. The auto trans seems to slip a gear on the highway at speeds of 60-70mph+. The problem goes away after an ignition cycle but will return again at those speeds (I'm assuming the higher gears are slipping under load). Upon inspection below, there is quite a bit of transmission fluid all over the undertray and other areas including the sway bar for some reason, see pictures below.

I'm assuming a gasket needs replacing and the trans is obviously very low on fluid to be behaving like mentioned above - question is, which gasket is bad and is this a DIY job? Or does this require the car up on a lift?

    Thanks in advance to all!

clean all components with brake cleaner, drive some miles and then check where the leak starts. Without this info we cannot help further, first you have to know where the leak starts, especially in the engine bay the fluid can splash anywhere if the aux fan blows it or when it drops down from somewhere at the top of the engine and you find it at the lower section finally.

The transmission fluid on the roll bar is likely from a leaky power steering hose. The power steering of all E56s sold in the US us Dexron3. Check the power steering fluid reservoir. As far as the transmission, has it had the fluid and filter changed? Be advised that BMW sourced automatic transmissions from GM of France and ZF of Germany. They are different transmissions that take different fluids. The fluid pan in the GM box has smooth sides. The ZF box fluid pan has ribs.
