Service Engine Soon Re gas cap

Had lost my gas cap and drove about 5k miles, no service engine light car ran fine. Left it in the forest in Oregon for 8 months. Went back to get it. Wouldn't start! Dropped new battery in, started right up, got in and drove 1000 miles trouble free to San Diego. However when it started up, service engine light came on. Didnt get a cap till I got to San Diego as I have to pass smog which it easily did last year. Bought an O'Reilly after market cap for 12 bucks, got light reset drove 40 miles till it came back on. Does anyone think it could be the cheaper cap? I tried the reset procedure using the trip odometer button but doesnt work. Car still runs amazing but I need the damn smog test. Any Ideas?

    No one can guess.
You need to get it scanned. Preferably by a scan tool that can correctly decipher BMW codes.

I use a $21 OBDII bluetooth scanner and my phone with Torque Pro app ($5)

That works at a pinch. But not BMW specific.
Will throw up misinformation when deciphering generic codes.

Foxwell 520 or INPA software is much more accurate.

The MIL (aka Check Engine light) is an OBD2 specific device and best diagnosed with an OBD2 scanner. This idea that BMW codes are better for engine/emissions diagnostics is incorrect; the unfortunate fallout of some now defunct company spending all of their money on marketing rather than improving their product beyond 1980's tech.

It won’t pass smog because the check engine light is on or there is a pending fault in the dme or the monitors are not set which one

Maybe thats because they thought BMW diagnostic tech peaked in the '80s
