    1991 850i
See attached...it looks like mine is "without" plastic center tube...agreed?
Can you recommend a quality replacement vendor and brand/part #?

For filters and other consumables I consult www.rockauto.com. They usually have a lot of options, part specific info, and actual photos of each filter. I don’t always buy from them, but they are a very useful reference if nothing else.

In your case, they have multiple options with and without the plastic tube.
    Hope that helps.

Oil filters one of those things where people have lots of opinions. I have always read good things about wix filters so have always used them In all my cars, various makes models and eras. I believe they have the plastic cap which I would think is more secure. I’m not sure if it matters or not. I am certainly no expert.

The genuine BMW filter for the E31 (p/n 11427510717) is manufactured by Hengst and made in Germany. Hengst part number for BMW is E2021 H01; aftermarket Hengst part number is E200H D22. When I worked in Volvo Penta product development, Volvo Penta engineering spec'd a better micron filtering number than the aftermarket filters offered. This made the genuine Volvo Penta oil filter more expensive than aftermarket brands, but for your extra dollars you got improved filtration of the oil.
The plastic center tube is BMW part number 11421745392, they call it a "support dome"- it's about $15.00 USD at most BMW retailers or genuine BMW parts sources on line. If you are missing yours, best to get a replacement. And, they are cheap enough-
    Hope this helps!

Oil tube can be purchased from BMW. It will fit right over your existing setup. These tubes were attached in the 93 model year from the factory to reduce any possible cavitation. With, or without, they ultimately function the same.
    Part # 11 42 1 745 392 - should be around $25. This part is also used on E32, E34, and E38

Support tower in oil filter housing (SI 00 15 97, PDF)
Oil filter element Part No. 11421745390, Support tower (single retrofit operation only necessary) Part No. 11421745392
    SI 00 15 97 (229) PDF, support tower in oil filter housing for E31, E32, E34, E38 and the M60, M62, M70, M73 engines
Environmentally friendly oil filter elements have been installed in the above engines at the factory since September 1995. For this reason, it was necessary to modify the oil filter element fixture in the form of a support tower. This support tower is fixed in the oil-filter housing and cannot be removed. So that the new oil filter element can also be used on vehicles manufactured before this date, a retrofit support tower has been designed to adapt the oil-filter housing to take the environmentally friendly filter element. This support tower is retrofitted once only and then remains in the oil-filter housing. It must not be changed at subsequent engine oil services.

However, the high turnover of this support tower leads to the assumption that it is frequently being incorrectly exchanged, along with the filter element during an oil change.

So the with or without plastic center tube is associated with the oil canister (attached to the car)...AGREED?
I did not look in there, BUT I WILL!
