VANOS Issues?

I just bought, as in ink not dry, an X5 with the N55 engine that is making this marble dropped in noise. They replaced the idler pulley that looked like it was going to come flying off. Noise is still there. So, I'm soaking in your expertise. Vanos seems to be a common problem with this vehicle. When I bought the vehicle, it ran great. Drove it over 300 miles home, ran perfectly. Took it to my mechanic, passed with flying colors. Next day... horrible engine noise. I have a 2001 330i with almost 200k miles and a rock star engine apparently. (Knock on wood) What the heck!?! I might just take the engine from my 330 and toss it in the 328 I have - because MAN they messed up there. Scrap the truck.

Did you replace the chain? Figure out what it is??? I need something...and a new engine can't be.
