During trips of around 50 miles or longer I have had issues where the circuit cutoff relay in the rear fuse box get scorching hot and I suspect is the cause various faults which start getting thrown. Had it in shop last week during which circuit cutoff relay and fuel pump relay were replaced but after driving home from shop the circuit cutoff relay was still noticeably hot.
Can anyone start me down the right path. What does this component do. R1 in the diagram

I guess it would depend what the relay is controlling
