Since I bought this 2001 X5 3.0i w/ Sport package 2 years ago, the multi-function steering wheel has not worked. Today I just tried swapping the slip ring and still no MFL function. Both slip rings happened to test good with a multimeter. I cannot connect to an MFL module using INPA...not sure if that is a thing that is possible on an '01 though.
INPA tells me the following when pulling codes from the DME:
--------------------------------------------------------------
45 MFL-Toggle-Bit
Error frequency : 1
Logistic counter: 40
N_32 0.00 rpm
VB 12.24 V

At this point I'm thinking maybe the button unit/module in the wheel is bad? Every time I've looked this up, the slip ring has been the issue. I think I've ruled that out, though.
The car does have an aftermarket radio hacked in that I would like to someday revert to stock + a Grom or something similar. I don't know if wheel signals pass through the radio at all, just thought it worth mentioning. Thankfully the harness in the dash is okay but the rear harness with the amp is completely cut up
Thanks, I'm gonna hang onto this. I'm thinking that since I can't communicate with the MFL that the unit in the wheel is shot.
