E9X Temp Sensor Slightly Passed the middle

    Sup Bimmer Fam,

Got an 08' E90 M3. The thermostat is supposedly not reading the temperature correctly.

    What's happening:
Took car to mechanic in 100 deg F weather because temp was inching past the middle line. Mechanic took laser thermometer and showed temp measuring at 170-190F but thermostat was showing over 220F.

Also, when I saw mechanic, turned car off, then turned back on to check temp, and fan started blasting the engine right away with the hood open.

    What do I do:
Was thinking of getting new temperature sensor from FCP cause they have lifetime warranty.
Was also thinking of getting new thermostat, and water pump cause I'm spooked.

    What do y'all think?

This is normal behavior. The gauge is displaying real oil temperature, not coolant temperature or thermostat temperature. When the car is running in 100F weather, you will see 220-230F oil temperature. The gauge is not an "idiot" three-position gauge either, and you will be able to watch it actively move up and down. I wouldn't spend money on a replacement sensor!

Thanks for the input Steve99m3. Do you have any additional cooling equipment for your M3? Oil cooler etc? Also, have you had to change/upgrade any of your cooling equipment? Or is everything stock?

    Thanks,

Other than an ACM modified muffler, my car is completely stock. No modifications. I believe your car has an oil cooler, same as mine. I don't think much, if anything, changed in the drivetrain between the '08 introduction and the '13 sunset.
