might want to be carefull removing drive belt from the system if the alternator is run by it the alternator may go full tilt trying to produced the volts without it spinning have seen them go up in smoke when doing this maybe carefully disconnect and don't arc the wires etc. for the alternator wiring harness first then try running without the belt....

Did you try turning the AC off?
That sounds exactly like mine did. It was the fan clutch, but it was not defective, it worked fine. It also would whine with the the fan removed. Very odd, and first clutch was no better. Second clutch did the trick. I found a belt to bypass the power steering pump as well which helped isolating the noise.
Found my old thread, if you want to bypass power steering pump only I’ve got the belt and routing shown here.

Couple of updates on this one. I did a full service on my car over the weekend (just hit 170k!) and dropped the pan to find no plastic bits at all and everything in good shape. I also took pictures of the guides this time, so if anyone sees anything I can't, definitely let me know!
I also pulled the accessory belt off and found that my belt tensioner sounded like the bearings were shot 10 years ago, so I replaced it with a new one. Starting the engine with the belt off, the noise was much better. After replacing the tensioner, the noise quieted down a bit but was still there, quieter at idle, but still there while revving the engine. I also drove around a few days without the fan clutch at all and the noise didn't change then either, so I am now pointing to the A/C compressor or the belt tensioner for that belt. Turning the A/C on and off doesn't change the noise. I will be taking that belt off in a few days and see what happens.
Thanks everyone for your help!

My vote would be a fan clutch as well, try holding the RPM at 2500 while parked and you should hear it clutch out. If you do replace it get and E65 fan and clutch.

uh collapsed bottom radiator hose? trans fluid type? just some "wild cards".....
I doubt it's the bottom hose though recently changed all my radiator hoses out and the bottom hose was rock solid even had some factory paint across it "E38" think it was the original hose .....
