Hi, I'm new to the forum. In 2015, I bought a new 2015 BMW 328i with Turbo (4 Cyl.). Today, dealership tells me I need a new Turbo Assembly (expected charge $5500 to $5700) on this vehicle. It has about 57K miles.
Recent Events:
1. Dealer performed routine maintenance (including oil change and inspection) last December, with no issues.
2. Since COVID in February, I have driven car very little.
3. Engine light came on about 3 months ago and I checked codes using a Foxwell NT510. This indicated a thermostat issue and nothing else. I cleared codes twice and each time thermostat was the issue. However, A/C worked well.
4. About 2 months ago, I noticed a small amount of oil coming from under the engine.
5. Last week, I took it for service.
6. Thermostat was an easy fix (no charge), but new Turbo Assembly is needed.
7. No smoke emission, no rattling, no engine loss or power failure, no failure to start. None of the symptoms of turbo failure.
8. All maintenance is up to date. No other issues, no previous oil leaks.
Questions:
1. Should I be suspicious of this diagnostic?
2. What does an OEM turbo replacement cost (labor and parts)?
3. Any thoughts on proceeding with dealership?
I would be suspicious. What is their proof?
The dealers have been trying to replenish their funds lost due to the downtime of COVID, but I would seriously need proof of it being the turbo.
If you can get a pic of where the oil is leaking from, it would help.

As the old saying goes: Trust but verify. Take the car to another dealership or an Independent BMW or euro only garage to get looked at. Ask them if they think the turbo is bad. Just like going to a doctor, when something comes up and you are not sure, get a second opinion.

It could be the turbo, if it’s coming from the pass. side than it could. When your thermo. went out, it could’ve caused the turbo housing to warp a bit on the oil lines inlet and/or outlet.
But If I were you, I would get a second opinion from another shop. Good luck!!
Thank you all kindly for the responses.

I understand that BMW offers a "Customer Care Package" on sone repairs. The dealerships generally don't make customers aware of them unless they are asked. Do you know of any "Customer Care Package" for a 2015 BMW 328i on tubo issues?
