Are the pump rebuild kits worth their salt, or is a rebuilt pump the preferred method?

If you rebuild it and replace the hoses and reservoir before it goes dry, the ZF pump components in the kit work as they should.

The kit is more or less exactly the same thing that any parts supplier would/should use to rebuild a "rebuilt" pump, so yeah it's fine. If anything I'd prefer rebuilding myself since I know I'm using quality components. I'm sure any of the more reputable online retailers would also be doing the same, but it might be a crap shoot on ebay or other lower end or more generic retailers who don't specialize in BMW.
