Hello. When I bought my car last November, it came with only 1 key and it was the one with the small red head. My owner’s manual included a booklet for remote control keyless entry. Shows the 3 button remote that is separate from the key. Was this standard equipment or optional? I can’t find the control unit that is in the car. Thought I read on here that it is under the driver’s side dash. Do you have to remove a panel to get to it? Like to use the feature if it came on the car.
thanks for your help.
Optional.

I swear, my cars are like a girlfriend.
Sometimes its a rough ride, sometimes its smooth motorin'.
Sometimes she doesnt like how i treat her and sometimes i dont like how she behaves.
BUT at the end of the day, she loves it when I am inside her.
This morning I went to the dealer and ordered a key. While there I also got a printout of the production order. It says code 0957 Alpine keyless entry. So, can someone please help me with finding the control unit in the car?
thanks
ebay is your only hope... it is a square fob that goes on your key ring.
these *might* work but the earlier cars only had a single button
they look like the ones in the link though

I have the fob. I’m looking for the location of the control unit in the car.
What you want is the ETM.
http://wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm
Down load the manuals you need.
E31-1993 - Anti-Theft system is in Section 6575.1
The alarm module is N1
The location of N1 can be found in section 7000, right hand door sill. I assume that is the RH foot well kick panel.
Section 7100.05-2 shows the location views.
Once you get the p/n off the anti-theft module I may have more document that can help.
The basic Alpine 1 & 3 Button remotes work the same for the control module.
I have yet to find the Alpine Alarm manuals online. However you may locate all the manuals on ebay.
Remove the code chip from the remote. Clear all the current installed codes, install the code chip it in the control unit and store the chip code.
Re-install the code chip back in the remote.
I will check this out. Thank you so much!
The receiver is located under the steering column, mounted to the black plastic enclosure panel.

ALPINA B7 -Alpinweiß III
...the price of cool ain't cheap!
For the benefit of others, when something references the left or right hand door sill, it’s talking about the electronic modules that are found underneath the door sill plates. However, with regard to this particular discussion, I’d rely on TxGr8white’s information regarding the location being under the steering column.

If the receiver is present under the black plastic enclosure panel (above the pedals) it may be possible to program remotes for your car. Let us know if the unit is present.
My car is a 93, and its located above that panel.

Obviously there is more to an E31 than the ETM!!
However, I didn't anticipate the Factory Build Sheet would include an dealer installed Central Locking Remote Control?
I anticipate the 0957 option was factory installed DWA.
So, I do have the BMW Dealer Installation Instructions:
Remote-Control Unit for Central Locking System (Version 1) 01 29 9 789 041.
Included remote programming instructions.
These instruction are for the BMW Dealer, after delivery installation.
Unfortunately, it is 1.2MB PDF, so I deleted several less useful pages to get it under the 1MB limit.
