E36 LTW Splitter and chassis balance

    Hey guys,

I have an E36 M3 track car where I'm fairly happy with the current setup, but found out that LTW additions are legal for my TT class without incurring any penalties. It happens that my previous E36 was an LTW replica and I still have the OE LTW front splitter on hand that I can throw on the car with just some trimming around the supports. The undertray needs to be replaced but is available on the market and not an issue. However, I sold the LTW wing a number of years ago and it appears that replacements are basically unobtanium right now. Replicas are fine, but from what I can tell almost all of those are coming from overseas and they are not currently shipping to the US.

So here is my question, will adding the splitter alone upset the high speed balance too much? I'm concerned that adding extra aero grip to the front will induce high speed oversteer, and I'd rather not be finding that out by trial and error in T5 at NCM or T12 at Road Atlanta.

Or if someone has an LTW wing they don't need I'm definitely open.

    TIA

Yes you do need to balance the front grip by adding grip to the rear, add an aftermarket wing. An aftermarket wing will be adjustable so you can fine tune the grip level to match the front.

I should have mentioned that aftermarket wings are a no-go for class rules, LTW or stock are the only options. If an aftermarket wing was on the table this wouldn't even be an issue as those are plentiful and more efficient than the LTW wing.

Not sure what LTW stands for but we have added a front splitter on a 2000 e46 and it definitely induced oversteer. We run a small lip on the trunk but will be adding more. Depending on class, if you running in NASA you can run aero but will take points. We are in TT5.

I actually like the LTW splitter in front and LTW low rise in the rear. I was getting a lot of understeer with hi rise LTW wing. You can also adjust the front splitter to help balance the car. You can feel the difference even when you dont extend the front lip out. I would try the front splitter first and see if you like it.

I only do HPDEs and use street tires, so my opinion may not be helpful but give it a shot...

Can the OE wing be an aftermarket replica?

Understeer due to added ‘weight’ on front tires?
Or splitter was not extended enough to balance with the high rise wing?

In his original post, he says replicas are fine.

Even with the tray extended, i was still getting turn in understeer. I removed the rear wing extensions and the car felt more neutral. Im also using gurney flaps on the LTW wing. Everyones car is setup different so others might not have the same experience i had. Try it out and see how you like it. Ppl also have difference handling characteristics.

I note that this MA Shaw web site page hasn't been updated since 1/7/2015...

I believe he still makes them. Although I've heard mixed reviews on the quality of the fitment.

This from Micheal Shaw today -

    and
“IT TAKES US ABOUT 2 WEEKS TO MAKE ONE

Not sure that marginal figment is an issue - ’Cause Race Car!!
