I have a 2013 X3 that needs a new turbo. While looking around for a replacement I found this upgrade kit: https://www.bimmerworld.com/MHI-N20-...-F22-228i.html
Looks like a pretty solid bolt-on option. Designed and manufactured by the OEM. Has anyone tried one of these? My main question is – would this require ECU reprogramming or any other adjustments to the electronics. I'm assuming the electronics are tuned for a specific turbo, but maybe that doesn't matter. I'm no turbo expert. I just don't want to bolt this on and then get a bunch of warnings when I start it up. I'm going to contact Bimmerworld with these questions but thought I'd post here to see if anyone had experience with this kit.
I heard back from Bimmerworld:
"The N20 big turbo upgrade is a fully bolt on upgrade with no tuning required. However, if you want to maximize the turbo's potential, we would recommend a tune, but it is not required."
From the product description it sounds like there are other pros to this upgrade, besides more power. Compared to the stock turbo it has better build quality and runs cooler. It's only $150 more than the stock turbo so I'm going to give it a try but if anyone here has tried it before I'd love to hear how it went.
Make sure to update this thread with some feedback about the turbo when it's done!
