For a 2006 325CI with a GM trans would Redline D6 be correct?
What is the fluid spec/part number on the sticker on the pan of the transmission?
Check the current spec for VALVOLINE MAXLIFE MULTI-VEHICLE ATF and see if it matches.

There is only one thing more pleasurable than working on a Z3, that's driving it top down on a fine day.
First, make sure it’s a GM transmission. The fluid pan sides are smooth on a GM of France transmission. Then go to the Redline website and enter your car’s info. Click on find products for my car or similar. It’ll tell you what Redline products are suitable for your car.

Went to the Red Line website and according to it I need D4 for the 2006 GM transmission.
Redline makes top notch products. I’ve been using the company’s gear lines since the1980s. D4ATF is also a great power steering fluid.
So I changed the fluid and filter today at 116,000 miles and it didn't even look like trans fluid. It was black and appeared to have a slight metallic haze as well. It actually seemed to shift better afterward. Wondering if I shouldn't give it another complete change in a couple hundred miles?

Yeah, I know Redline lubes are expensive but I would definitely change it again after 200-300 miles. When you drain the fluid you are actually draining about 60% of the fluid as the torque converter holds a bunch of fluid. You might consider using Dexron6 or the Maxlife noted above to do a series of drain/refills. They are cheaper than Redline. Then, use Redline for the final fill.
So you don't think The filter should be changed as well?
Take a look at the filter to see how grubby it is. You should consider changing it when you do the final drain and fill. Make sure you are using the proper fill procedure so that you do t under- or overfill the transmission.
