E46 owner looking for a newer BMW

    Probably a 335i or 340i. Possibly a 4 series.
    Looking at 2015-2017 models.
    What I know:
2015 is last year for N55 engine
2017 has the new B58 engine.
Both have similar interiors and features and 0-60 times.
Would love a manual trans but they go for about $10,000 more for comparable vehicle and not willing to spend that so I will go with 8 speed automatic.
Don't really care about what features one has over the other that are not tied to performance or longevity.

    Information I'm looking for:
Problems common to either engine. Is there one that is considerably better in terms of longevity, maintenance costs, etc.
Other engine differences. Can one be "chipped" or otherwise modified to get drastically more performance?
Problems common to other parts of the car or drivetrain in the 2015 vs 2017.
    Other things to consider.

The 2015 is going to be more in my price range and I always think it's smarter to buy the last year of a model vs. the first few years where something like the engine was changed/upgraded. That said, I would rather spend a little more now if a 2017 is head and shoulders better. My 2000 323 is getting tired and beat up from 20 years in Michigan and I need to find a replacement that I can drive for the next 15 years.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

id go b58 all day. Same engine the new Supra has, ie aftermarket is exploding for that one.
If I were to give my Touring a first name, I'd probably name it "Alan".
    Mostly because I like puns.
