I have a 2017 540 and I'm looking to get a new car in the next 12-15 months. I don't want to get the current platform at the tail end of its life so I need to know when BMW is planning on releasing the new-from-the-ground-up 5er. Isn't is usually a five year cycle? If so, the 2022 should be the new model.
Is my reasoning correct?
On average it's usually a 7 yr cycle but not set in stone...the beginning model years are starting to get "fuzzy" as I go back in time...so feel free to make corrections:
- e12: 1972-1981
- e28: 1982-1988
- e34: 1988-1995
- e39: 1996-2003 (no official 1996 5 series model yr in the USA market..debut delayed due to the introduction of OBD II...e39's debut was in June of 1996 as official '97 model yr vehicles)
- e60: 2004-2009
- f10: 2010-2016
- g30: 2017-2023 ?? (possibly debut in the fall of 2022 as a '23 model yr)

Minor correction, I think the E60 was 2004-2010.
I do believe you are correct about G30 and the next generation, but who the heck knows what BMW will do.
