    BMW 645 ci timing chain

    Hi Guys,

I have a 645ci which I don't think was well looked after before my purchase.

It had various issues and I have fixed it . Next on list if the timing chain as it is making a clicking noise like spun bearing ( it is not the head and not the bearings).

I have driven it hard and if it was bearing it would have given up by now and did an oil analysis and it came back ok.

My question is I am going to do this myself and what brand should I use to do the full chain kit? Car has 110k miles on it.

BMW costs around £460 and ebay it is £130 but don't want to install a bad brand so it breaks half way. Do people normally change the guide or guide and chain ?

I have done DIY for past 15 years and understand cars but not expert. I have rebuilt engine and it worked believe it or not. My question is , is there a manual for n62 engine showing step by step guide as this is new to me?
    thanks

It is worth changing the chain tensioners first - there are two of the, one for each bank. The one on Bank 2 is easy, the one on Bank 1 needs the engine lifted from underneath so it gets past the chassis member. They are pretty cheap as well!

    Manual is here: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/

That noise is from the vacuum pump - if he had pressed on the faceplate of it - or removed the vacuum line to it - the noise would change substantially. And the reason it makes the noise - and the reason that the belts squeak is because he has failed to service the engine correctly - all explained here:
