    Manual transmission issue overheat?

    Hi

    2000 M roadster, 160,000 km

I m having issue shifting back to the first and second speed when i m driving sport mode in very hot weather 35C. It very hard to get back to speed one when i stop at a light. Should i add more transmission oil?

    Thanks for any advice

No, you should replace your rubber clutch line with stainless steel most likely

Bingo. If it get progressively harder to shift the warmer it gets then look at the line first. Like BB said if it rubber it’s likely time to replace.

Ok, 1 to 1.5 hours of labor, 100$ cad for the oem part. I ll get a stainless one if i understand right (not the oem)?

What should i look for when i visually inspect it? Leak?

    Thank

Hopefully you will not see a leak. The rubber line, over time, loses some of its rigidity, causing the line to expand under use.

I just ordered two of the OEM 3.0 clutch lines to do this job on both of my cars. I'm going to put the roadster up on the QuickJack this weekend to do a little reconnaissance and decide if I want to tackle to or go to a shop.

Don't visually inspect it. Replace it. Put in a SS line. You will be glad you did. The car will shift better. If I had a brand new car, I'd put in a SS line.

Thanks for this thread. I just picked up my 2000 M over the weekend. It had been sitting in the sun on a hot day when I test drove it and it was horrible getting into gears. I had to plaster the pedal on the floorboard to get it into gears, esp 1st and reverse. Today after it sitting in my garage, the shifting was much better. I just ordered a braided line to hopefully it will be better soon.

I bought ECS. I think UUC is thought of as good also.

This is the one I used. Many older members will recommend it. Make sure you check your model in the search.

My 98 M didn't. I don't think any M's have it, but not sure. It ought to be easy to see. I'd find some pictures , google "z3 cdv pictures", so I'd know what to look for.

2000 m Roadsters have a CDV. I deleted mine with a stainless steel one from Bimmerworld.

Nope. M's do not have a CDV. What they have is a hose that is manufactured with the hole in one end smaller than the other. This hole is pointed at and called a "CDV" by some. In fact that hole is four times larger than the orifice in a CDV, .090. vs .046. If it restricts anything, it would be a clutch dump in sub-zero temps.

Technicalities aside, when I change mine to a stainless steel hose with no restrictions it made a big difference.

Yes, when you get rid of the old spongy rubber line and replace it with something with no give, the clutch feel improves dramaticly. That's why I have been advocating the braided steel over new rubber of whatever source for a decade now.

My point guys, if your going to replace the hose, go with one with no restrictions. I was just trying to be helpful to some that are just starting the z3 adventure. In the past year and a half your input has been so helpful to me and I appreciate that. Thought it would help others.
