My wife has a 2012 BMW X3 with 49,000+ miles.. Last December she had the brake pads replace by a conscious and reliable shop. They also replaced one faulty sensor. After less than 1,000 miles, it seems like the parking brake is engaged and when she takes her foot off the accelerator, the car comes to a slow stop. The shop owner has checked the brakes twice and finds no faults and guess what ....it doesn't do it for him! I was driving it 2 miles home and it continues to drag.. I checked the onboard computer and it registered a warning, rear brakes need work in 900 miles. I contacted my shop and they said they would correct or fix any problems. Any suggestions???

Welcome to the forum...
Is this an intermittent problem since it didn't do it for the shop? Did you drive with someone from the shop to show them them issue?
You know the vehicle has "Brake Energy Regeneration" right, which gives the feeling of the brakes being applied at certain times when letting off the throttle?
Sounds like you should find a new shop. If a brake caliper is sticking or dragging, it should be very easy to find/diagnose.

Have a look at the rear rotors, both inside and outside, on both sides of the car, use a torch. What colour are they? Silver like normal, or turning purple? Does the vehicle have hand brake shoes? Are they dragging? Does it feel like the hand brake is fully disengaged? Jack the back of the car up (safely of course), hand brake off and in neutral, do the wheels spin free or can you feel drag?
Or, if you're not 100% sure what you're doing, take it to a brake specialist.
The F25 doesn't have a hand brake, the parking brake is electric, nor does it have separate parking brake shoes.
I agree if you don't know what you're doing take it back to the shop and show them the issue, but like I mentioned in my previous post, the vehicle has "Brake Energy Regeneration" and what the OP may be observing is normal behavior and there's nothing wrong
So is the park brake system still cable from the front of the vehicle with an electric button (I hope not, I wouldn't think BMW would be that cheap), or does it have the electric actuators in the rear calipers?
No cables, electric button with electric actuators on each caliber.
The "Brake Energy Regeneration" uses the alternator to charge the battery when letting off the throttle, so if feels like the brakes are dragging since the extra load on the alternator slows the vehicle.
BTW, I think the OP has left the building since they haven't responded since they put their 1st and only post here
Thank you all for your help! I forwarded your responses to my shop and Scott appreciated your comments an asked me to drop the X3 off in the morning and if he can"t solve the problem quickly, have it flat bedded to the Independant BMW shop. I will post the results when I find out. Again, Thank you, barrymoore3
