    Water Pump?

I just installed a new water pump, drove like 1300 miles and one day, I see water coming from the motor. So took of the water pump pulley and serpentine belt to inspect further. I put my hand under the thermostat and felt water coming up from behind the harmonic balancer, spraying up. Do you think it's the water coming from the weeping hole?

On another note, I thought it was the valley pan which I changed, but I had a stripped screw and one bolt was pit in with tread tape and blue loctite. I don't see water coming from on top of the motor.

    Any thoughts on water leak?

Correct your My Car to what you have and are asking about.
Did you use a BMW we gasket or an aftermarket one?

I used a aftermarket gasket, so you're thinking just use oem gasket with silicone sealant and should solve the problem? Probably get a new water pump too, right?

I've put OEM Saleri pump along with genuine BMW paper gasket on my X5 (4.6 but same part as M62 4.4) and no leaks or issues for few years now.
These are thin special paper gaskets and no sealant necessary. If wrong or to much of sealant used, that itself can create a leak.

The OE gasket has a rubber type seal on one side.
If you are going to put sealant on the other side it should be a very thin coat.
Permatex makes a sealant for use on water pump and thermostat housings gaskets, #22071.

Get a mechanic’s mirror and bright light in there to see exactly where it’s leaking, then take the next step. Guessing leads to unhappiness.

My experience exactly: the gasket packed with the pump leaked. A gen-u-wine BMW gasket solved it.

Make sure you transfer the two locating sleeves to the new pump.

turned out to be the hose from the water pump to the trans cooler, it was rubbing on the harmonic balancer since the hose bracket wasn't screwed in.
