F30 Steering Wheel on E36 with Functional Buttons

    Hello friends

After installing BMW f30 steering wheel, functional buttons (radio and cruise control) are fully activated with business rds tape. All buttons can control business radio with no fault and also I will activate cruise control and bluetooth car kit function later. I am waiting new pcb to make them.
I hope you liked the project and the video.

Video is Turkish but it has English Substitles.

Funny, I always felt that F30 steering wheel looked like a modern version of an e36 M3 wheel. Nice job!

Awesome electronics work, how does the 2 stage airbag work with the 1 stage e36 system? I can only assume you haven't tested it.

Nice job. The wheels all fit the column, it’s always the slipring/electronics that are the issue.

The M version with shift paddles would be cool.

The E38/E39 steering wheel buttons are a straight fit and don’t require PCB modding.

(the shift paddles did need some tweaking)

E38/e39 wheel buttons can only control cd23/43, can't it?
Business rds i bus pin is empty to control.
Shift pedals and this steering (e39) wheel are very expensive in Turkey. F30 steering wheel is cheaper than it and we can't find good quaility wheel.

I did not test it but there is no error code after installing the steering wheel. Both of them have two connection pins. I have no idea about their stages.

Yeah you need an ibus radio. Don’t know what model the C23 is. CD43/BE2455 (top of the range models) work, so that is fine.

So if no ibus, what protocol controls the Business RDS?

You don’t need the e38/e39 wheel, they are bigger than the E36 wheel. You only need the button pods.

Set of shift paddles off Ebay is not so expensive.

I use my own protocol via ibus pin on Rds. I also used this protocol to control Bluetooth Car Kit and Cruise control.

What I find interesting is that the non-ibus Business RDS understands any protocol to control it. Unless the whole radio is engineered with new control electronics.
