The driver's floor mat in my car was in reasonably good condition ( for a 20 year old mat) and I didn't feel like forking out $$$ to replace it.
The problem with it was the rubber backing on the bottom was hard and deteriorating, little hard black "grains" or "pebbles" of black rubber were breaking off and getting crunched onto the floor. I would have to vacuum it out every weekend after taking it for a drive.
My cheap solution was to resurface the bottom of the mat with a rubber coating.
Rustoleum makes a product that comes in either white or black and I ordered an 8 oz can from Amazon. It's not a very big can, but it is enough to brush 2 coats on the bottom driver's mat with about 1/3 can left over. Can was about $18, a lot less than quality replacement mats.

I banged the bottom of the mat on my front porch step for several minutes to get as much of the dried rubber off then ran a wire brush over the leftovers.
I used a 1-1/2 inch brush to apply the sealant, waited 5 minutes and put on a second coat.
After it dried I put it back in my car and did a slip test and the fresh coating kept my mat from sliding around like it did before I re-coated it.
Just a helpful tip to those experiencing anything similar.
I should've taken a 'before' pic of the bottom to show the difference, the pic I posted is 'after'.
