Hey all, So I put a new (used) engine in my 2008 M5, at first it was running fine but then after idling it for about 10 minutes, reving it up a bit to make sure everything is good, and some other tests I put the rest of the car together, but now its got some issues. it devolped a cam timing code and started idling really rough, intake timing on Bank B showed over-retarted. I checked the solinoid and cam sensor connection and cleared the code, started it up and it ran fine, for about five minutes, once the gas pedal was applied and revs passed 3-4k it went into limp mode and sounded out of time again, at that point it had intake over retarted on bank B and now Exhaust on Bank A. At the time of writting this it has all four cams as over retarted. the Vanos solinoids are good so im a bit confused here, potentially the Vanos High Pressure line? im not sure, I got a low oil pressure warning while test driving it the first time after checking oil and running it havnt had that since, but its still got the vanos troubles. anyone got any ideas?
Mechanically the engine is probably fine. You probably have wired the camshaft sensors incorrectly as they are close together, and the connectors look the same. This happened on my old 545i. No issues yet with my M5.
Or the vanos pump is bad, or the high pressure line is leaking inside the timing case, or something with the regular oil pump (you did get a low oil pressure light).
That's the problem with a used engine is you never really know what you're getting.
