    Ews problem 1992 m50 NV in a 1994 325is

The car is a 1994 325is, which originally had a single vanos m50 in it. So I found a donor 1992 non vanos car, with so I fully rebuilt the engine bearings, rings and all. So I’ve done the swap already, the engine is in and all wired up. I used the 402 red label ecu, with the non vanos harness in the car. And I went to start it but it was a crank but no start issue. Fuel pump is brand new, crank sensors are brand new. Coil packs are new and work properly, all relays work. So I think it’s an Ews issue, and I’m not sure what I need to splice inside the car for the car to start. But the weird thing is, for shits I used the old red label 413 ecu from the vanos engine and it started, but ran horribly because it’s the wrong ecu. If anyone can help me It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

I would open up the dme and look on both sides of the board, check for white oxide tracks. You can clean it even if you don't see anything, use contact cleaner or even better use Deoxit 5%, scrub the board with an old toothbrush. You have to let it dry for 24hrs in a warm dry spot before installing.

No EWS in those early cars.
Not sure if you can swap vanos and non vanos ecus on each other.

Eric93se, okay I will try that, the car is at my brother in laws shop a few hours away so, I go over there on the weekends when I’m off work. So I’ll try that, couldn’t I just buy another used red 402 or 403 incase that is the issue?

You have to use the ecu that matches the engine.. I would use the nv harness as well as it shouldnt have any ews related system to the dme from the chassis. I dont know for sure the difference, but if its a different ecu, probably uses a different harness.

Yes I used the nv harness and the ecu, but I’m leaning on the side that my ecu is bad.

Okay so I bought a new 402 ecu to put in the car, but nothing has changed. I put the new ecu in and it’s still cranking without starting, I’m thinking it’s a ews issue, but everyone I’ve talked to have said that 94’s don’t have ews. So I’m stumped, now do I just buy a stand-alone or take it to a shop ?
