Drained a few ounces. Smells like oil. No burnt smell that I can tell, anyway. But shouldn’t it have some sort of a red tint.
Here’s another pic
It a GM tranny.

It looks king of like oil that’s had a little bit of water contamination. Hope it ain’t that!
Does the trans cooler live inside the rad?
Looked at coolant in overflow. Looks brand new. Bright green.

The trans color does live inside the radiator (you can see the coolor lines on the bottom right hand side, under the expansion tank) but the fluid shouldn't be that dark. I would be careful changing the fluid. I know you said it didn't smell burnt, but when I still had my auto GM I changed my fluid and it looked dark like that, more brownish than yours though. Afterwards I experienced very heavy slipping in fifth and complete slipping on colder mornings until everything warmed up. I'm not an expert, but I'd just be careful until someone more knowledgeable on automatics comes in here.

Well, this afternoon was quite the clusterfuck.
I decided to do a partial change.
I drained between 2 and 3 quarts.
Then I wS having a hell of a time getting new fluid in. The “drain plug was quite small and anything I pumped it just spilled out.
WTF?
I then went back and watched 50skid’s video and realized I was trying to fill the wrong hole. Not sure what that plug was. Anyway, after refilling the correct hole, took it for a ride and all is well. My plan is to do another partial. Maybe another 3-4 qts in a few weeks. Then another full change with filter change.

If it was a stout it was probably really good, it's old and tired
Your coolant shouldn't be green, either. It should be blue. Someone cheaped (or timed) out and put the wrong stuff in there. BMW coolant isn't that expensive (usually $15 gallon) and is normally in stock at dealers.
Will the green stuff cause trouble? Looks like I have another job.
Depends on what it is. The issue isn’t the color, the issue is the chemistry. The engine block drain plug is located between cylinders 1 and 2 under the exhaust manifold. Expect a coolant shower when you pull this plug. Thanks BMW. You’ll need to buy a new crush washer for this plug or else you’ll have a leak. Ask me how I know. It’s a good idea to flush the system with distilled water before putting in fresh coolant. That is, fill it, bleed it, drive it 20 miles, drain it. Use a 50/50 mix of BMW coolant and distilled water.
I think you may have had Pentosin in that transmission, as not all trans fluids are reddish/pink.
What does the label on the trans/pan specify?
Here's their site:http://www.pentosin.net/f_transmissionfluid.asp
The darkness is the friction material from the clutches in the box wearing into the fluid. What colour was the fluid from factory, not all ATF is red.
