Changing oil tonight and decided to replace oil drain plug with ECS Magnetic drain plug. On final pull to tighten, it of course snapped in two. By divine intervention, i was able to extract the rest of it with a flat screwdriver. So i went back to my old drain plug. First few turns (by hand) were fine, then it became very tight. Tried it again and this time with the ratchet (gently) through the tight portion for a few turns, then was able to turn by hand until the final turn. No leaks so far.
I assume i jacked up the threads? Is this problem only going to get worse?
If it torques to spec and doesn't leak then don't worry about it imo

I have also broke the drain plug before. Got a new one and replaced it and haven’t noticed any leaks since. And that was 60,000 miles ago. Now I always tighten it with a torque wrench though.
you can always try to run a tap through it to make sure the threads are clean and not messed up next time you do an oil change... but then maybe run ( just pour dont actually start the car ) a quart of oil through it to wash the bottom of the pain out for any chips that it may have pushed through? just a idea, if it is messed up will probably have to pull the pan off no matter what... some one correct me if im wrong?
You probably retreaded damaged threads by forcing the pan bolt in. Using a rethreader would have been better. If it goes in and out next time, don’t worry about it.
Thanks, i was thinking (hoping) it might rethread when I put the bolt back in.
I don't understand this.
How do you snap that bolt at 18 lb-ft?
