    SES code p0174-p0171

    hey everyone,

So the other day I took a log trip from San Diego to LA, I checked my dipstick just making sure all the levels were right, coolant etc. And an SES light came on about an hour after. I realized later that my dipstick was not fully in the holster by about half an inch. Anyways, took it to autozone and got the code ran. P0171-P0174. Called my mechanic he said the car should be fine, but to bring it back as soon as possible because it could be a variety of hoses, intake manifold gasket and who knows what else. The cars mpg sensor is all over the place, and of course, the idle is a little off, not anything like hunting or way sudden surges, just off by about 1-300 rpm it'll fluctuate, and this is seldomly. And when I lift off the gas, sometimes the RPM's wont drop all the way. It seems like it will be a vaccum leak of some sort, but obviously can't wait to take it to a professional to get it checked out. I have done research on the codes and all of them sound pretty common and hopefully should be an easy fix. The one thing I did notice tonight though;this is about 2 days of the codes being left on since I was not able to get back to San Diego right away and had to drive home, that today the engine bay felt very hot after shut down and a "hot smell" briefly came through the cabin. Not anything like oil, or sweet like radiator fluid, just a hot smell. Opened the hood and the engine bay was very hot. I know engine bays are hot, but this was like the devil's hooves. Anyways, proceeded to let the car cool down and checked the coolant level bopper, that was all good. And checked my dipstick to make sure it wouldn't possibly be an internal motor leak or valve cover gasket. And that was all good as well. Is this normal for this to happen with this code? Other than that- that car has been running fine and shifts fine, rpm's surges don't happen, the temp gauge is dead center. I'm hoping it's not a cat converter.

Kalifmora: glad to see your getting things sorted. I don't think your in dire straits
Sounds like your mechanic is familiar with this and he should be, these codes are very common! Btw at any chance do you have installed the "performance" air filter?
Keep us posted with your solution.
