    Question E93 First Purchase

Thinking about getting a high mileage 07 e93 328i 112,000 miles for under $7,000 + $1000 fees. Looking at the carfax, it has some damage reported but the pictures seem to suggest it’s very clean and the interior looks pretty well maintained. Carfax also shows lots of periodic mantenance at the dealer. The only thing that’s slightly concerning is the second owner before he sold it took it to the dealer for routine mantainence, then a couple days later, took it to an independent repair shop. I’m thinking could this mean major mechanical issues? The third owner also owned it for less than a year before selling it to the used car dealership.

I’m not looking for a perfect car and I’m happy to do some wrenching if required and have enough money as a slush fund for repairs.

The used car dealership offers a 1000 mile/30 day warranty, is a GMC aftermarket warranty worth it? Should I do a PPI? Is the price too high or too low? I’ve heard this is a reliable engine but wanted to reach out to the experts to see if there’s anything I should be checking for on a test drive.

There are two engines, N51 and N52. The N52 is better. I bought an '08 with 67000 miles on 05/26, no accidents or damage reported by Carfax. Use www.mdecoder.com to get a build sheet that will list up how the car was delivered from the factory.

it's actually an '08 not an 07 like I remembered. It has an N52 engine.

The issue with going to the dealer, and then independent probably isn't an issue at all. Happens all the time. They go to the dealer for some routine maintenance. The tech finds some additional issues needing repair (likely oil leaks, or other minor mechanical issues). The owner thinks the dealership charges too much, and then goes to an independent shop for another opinion, or to have the repairs made at a lower cost (and oftentimes, a lower quality repair, by a lesser trained and much less experienced technician that may or may not be totally competent when it comes to BMW repair and their nuances).

Get a PPI from someone you trust, and either walk away or buy it. You can also use the PPI to bargain for a lower price. Also, being were in the age of Corona, you should be able to bargain hard. The Carfax should also tell you how long the car has been on the dealer's lot.
