    2001 330CI flywheel replacement

Just started getting loud vibration and clutch chatter when I depress the clutch all the way down on my 2001 330Ci (117,000 miles) today. More noticeable at full stop. The descriptions of bad flywheel at this site describe my symptoms exactly.

I've seen many posts that ask if a flywheel should be replaced when someone is in there replacing the clutch...but I don't see the reverse question. Can just the flywheel be replaced? I don't feel any gear slippage or smell anything.

Or is it the case that the flywheel is more expensive, so the question is moot; the mechanic will be in there, so they might as well do it all.

Also, can I drive the car the 10 miles or so to my mechanic without doing any further damage, or do I have to consider a tow?

    Thanks.

Generally, when you pull the transmission, you want to change the clutch.

The flywheel is a dual mass flywheel. They tend to wear out by 200k miles unless the car is driven gently. Can you drive 10 miles to the shop. Probably be ok. As noted, once you go to the troubkk l e of dropping the transmission you might as well replace the:
    - pressure plate
    - friction disk
    - throwout bearing
    - pilot bearing
    - clutch release fork pivot pin
    - shifter plastic parts
    - slave cylinder

You might consider replacing the starter.

Also since the dual flywheel are kind of expensive Valeo makes a clutch kit that's comes with the flywheel and it replaces the twinmass with a conventional flywheel, like how they used to be. Good price in the kit also

    This ^

I replaced mine with a light weight non adjusting flywheel. 13lbs vs 23ish pounds dual mass. Then I got the non adjusting clutch kit. Definitely cheaper and I haven’t experienced and negatives since doing it.

I would always replace all the parts when you have the transmission pulled. It saves you in labor charges later on down the road.
