Hello.
I own an 2003 BMW 318i with N42 2L engine, no turbo. 116 000 miles
Last week I lost all the power down low. I need to rev up to 3000 RPM for the car to move anywhere ( Cold and hot engine).
I'm suspecting that the timing chain could be gone or the stem seals could be blown, but that's my blind guess.
I would love some opinions or knowledge what it actuality could be .
Thank you Have a great day.
The first step in diagnosing a problem is to scan the engine computer (DME in BMWspeak) for codes.
If it was the timing chain, you wouldn't be reving the car to 3,00 rpm. The engine would sound like a bucket of bolts and not likely running.
+1 on getting the trouble codes read.
Is your car an automatic? Meaning that you have to rev it hard to get it moving? Is it a problem with the automatic transmission and not the engine? Get the transmission trouble codes read too. This needs a scanner with BMW software.
1999 2.8L Z3 Roadster,
2000 3.0L Z3 Roadster,
There is only one thing more pleasurable than working on a Z3, that's driving it top down on a fine day.
I apologise for the late replay it's 5 speed manual.
I'm getting 4 trouble codes with my OBS scanner
1043 - Injector 3 short circuit
1035
285E
285C
I have only OBS scan tool.
4 codes
1043
1035
285E
285C
We need the description of each code.
OBS won't tell me.
BUT I found the problem.
My clutch is gone. I did the test.
2nd gear and let the clutch out, it didn't stall AT ALL.
Need to replace my clutch
