I have needed to open my tailgate with the remote or the switch at the drivers seat for months. The button on the hatch did not work. This morning I took 2 large dogs to the dog park and when I returned home the tailgate would not open from the switch at driver or either of my 2 remotes.
I can hear a noise as though the hatch is released. It just doesn’t open. Any ideas???

Some information.
I have learned.
This car should be equipped with an emergency release handle in the floor.
If yours is gone, focus on getting to the floor of the rear of your car. Not an easy task with the hatch closed, but you can find a way.
Under the door in the latch area there is a tab you can pull on with a needle nose pliers to release the hatch.
Now I will start to reassemble my car a bit and try to sort out what went wrong.

We'll assume this is the wagon? Please id the car type
The release latch can theoretically get stuck, with dirt or animal hair, so the emergency release string would help get it to release. It would have to be cleaned or maybe even replaced if it doesn't respond.

The car is a 2014 328xi wagon.
I have used a guitar string to restring my emergency release, now I can function day to day.
I will lube lock tomorrow.
It seems to me that the electronic mechanism is not working. I have been through my fuses but no joy.
I am hoping someone has been down this path before.
I am passed the immediate crisis but would love to be able to fix it without the dealer.
Since the emergency release equipment was all gone, I have to believe it has happened before.
I purchased car used with 26.000 miles, but 5 years old.
Any ideas?

You can replace the latch (if it's truly not working). It was used on multiple models, so they aren't too bad to find used even.
It will involve pulling some trim, and then disconnecting it from the soft lock mechanism that is found on the left side, D pillar area.

Does the wagon have the valet lockout switch in the glove box, and if so, is it set to "lock"?

Haven't seen such button.
Also this may help if you need to replace the lock
