SO, just bought a '96 750il. Looked pretty good to me, body was really good and the interior only had a few of the 7series usual issues. Only 100k miles on the clock. Top end was in pieces cause the car had been with a hack mechanic for 6 months due to a blown headgasket. Owner loves older BMW, but doesn't seem to be mechanically inclined. Had it parked at a friend's house who had been working on it for a while after recovering it from the shop it sat at. Owner was throwing parts at it left and right, pretty much everything in the engine bay is clearly new including rebuilt heads. Guy says it would turn over and wouldn't start so he was tearing it back down to see whats going on. Should have been my signal to run away, but I was so enamored by the thought of owning a V12 that I ignored that and several other red flags. Paid 1600 and towed it to my place. After 2 days of tear down I discovered tons of bent valves on the new heads and the missing exhaust nut all chewed up inside cylinder 4 completely scoring up the cylinder wall. Every cylinder kissed a valve. After some consideration I decided not to part it out and to search for a used engine. Was hoping I could get some help or tips on locating one, maybe one of you are trying to get rid of one... any help would be much appreciated in these trying times!
I dont know how you motor end up with bent valves but I really think these m73 are bullet proof. I have an 00 750il and commute 100 miles a day to work and I get on full throttle pretty often now with 226k miles and I dont see it going dead anytime soon. I kept a spare M73 as spare from my part car, but I can't see it needing replace anytime soon even at 226k miles. I would sell that to you but i can't imagine dealing with shipping this anker.

I ended up striking a deal with a guy on ebay for a 200k mile engine. 900 shipping included, thankfully I have a place that can take freight shipments. Appreciate the thought though! Other than just a complete seal job what work would you recommend doing while I've got the engine out?
That's a reasonable price...i would atleast open the intake manifold an assess the manifold gaskets and go from there, as they're pretty pricey but probably one of the only thing that will give you problem. Valve cover gasket probably never been replace and hard cooked to your valve cover. Assess your cpv valve on both side if you need to replace. Sparkplug is a must, you have 2 sets of spark wires measure the resistance and use the ones that are good.

The previous owner had a whole trunk load of new parts. Plugs, wires, sensors, coils, and a bunch of hoses and so on. New accessories too. Will definitely be doing all new seals top and bottom. Now I just need to source an engine hoist lmao. Thats alright though cause I was planning to engine swap my daily as well so it will be well used.
I had to stop in Albany, NY to pick up a two ton engine hoist on my way to pick up a motor in north Jersey. Harbor Freight let my wife and me assemble it in the back room since it was freezing out. Handy to have and pretty cheap, perfect for someone who only needs one for a few jobs.
Good luck with the project!
I have an engine out of a 1998 750il. Located in Warwick NY $800.
There is a cheap trick with the intake manifolds on the v12 - reuse the old ones and use hylomar gasket material - there are links out there to the articles.
