Never seen anything like this... Sorry for my bad narration during the video but I was a little pissed. Taking it in tomorrow but what do you all think... This occurs at random. Happens sometimes in 4th but most always in 6th. Happens at least once a day. I drive in sport with D2 setting.
If you haven't watched the video... The car at random gets to 6th and stays there even during rapid braking and full acceleration... Car is 2 months old.
Please help! So much sacrifice to get this car and and I'm becoming so upset...
Thank you all so much.
The car is under warranty. Take it back to the dealer. Show them the vid. The dealer has all of the latest diagnostic software. The engine computer (DME in BMWspeak) and/or the transmission computer may need a software update.
Ya I would be upset to
Newer vehicles resist downshifting during acceleration as much as possible for economy and emissions, and it's super annoying. I would think that sport mode would dial down that resistance a little, but that's probably the correct way for that vehicle to behave seeing as how it did downshift when you hit the detent. And it's not as if the car wasn't accelerating pretty quickly even though it was in 6th.
Thank you guys. I'm on the way to the dealer now I will keep you updated.
Apparently this is going to the higher ups at BMW... Won't even hear anything until next Wednesday. They have no idea what it is and haven't seen anything like it.
Having worked at the dealer for a number of years' it's hopefully going to be a quick fix, but some how I don't think it will be.
If it's not a software issue, then it's likely that it's not an issue at all.
Has anyone determined that this isn't how it was designed to work in the first place? Or are we all just assuming that an M5 should downshift when applying the throttle at 40mph in 6th gear, based on what may have happened in previous models? (Was the OP's previous vehicle an M5 of an earlier generation?)
I mean, you'd assume that the service dept would know if that's normal or not (or would drive another M5 to confirm), but then again, I've heard some seriously incompetent stories come out of supposedly professional dealerships.
The "detent button"? Yes, I heard you say it's floored a dozen times.
Are you then pushing the throttle past a point of resistance? That could be intended operation.
If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
In what vehicle operating mode are you in during this? Sports, Comfort, etc...
My normal ZF 8HP transmission behaves exactly like that in sports chassis mode, sports transmission mode, and manual gear selection. I can hold a specific gear even pegged at redline, or 8th gear at 40mph / 1000rpm. These 8HPs are really amazing transmissions, and this can be normal, depending on which mode you're in. The only time it will shift then is if the engine rpm is too low, risking a stall.
If you use the paddle shifter, it will shift, won't it?

new generation models always have issues. Mostly a software issue but who knows. They even have the new 2020 m5 getting motors replaced due to manufacturing defect with the crank case system.
