M20 Turbo - What am I not making power??

Hello forum members... long time lurker, first time poster. I just got back from a tuning session with my e30 325i running a Comp 6262 turbo with a .82a/r exhaust housing and got some disappoint results.

We started out at 10psi and made 221hp, with it falling off around 5500 rpm. A bit low, but not overly concerning.

After tweaking the timing and upping the boost we eventually got to a whopping 240hp at 17psi.... wtf.

My tuner checked for boost leaks and found none. Verified timing and it was spot on. We tried disconnecting the exhaust at the down pipe to see if it was too restrictive and that made no difference. He concluded that the Comp turbo is the problem and said he’s seen them do this before.

Anything else I should try before ordering another turbo? Thanks

Comp turbos are fine. Probably the tune. Post your timing and fuel maps.

Both ve and ignition could use improvements.

Looks like you may have some settings wrong.

Any suggestions of what settings to check? I realize that is a probably not a simple question to answer...

I’d guess your injector base settings are wrong.

Before discussing ignition we would need the trigger settings.

I'm running TRE 60lb injectors and wasted spark on a IGN-6 coil from DIYAutotune. Thank you for looking at this!

Also, AFR's seem pretty consistent under boost (for what it's worth)

Is 97 correct? Have you validated it with a timing light?

Yes, it was set to 10* Fixed and verified with a programmable light. Although it was the tuner who verified it...

don't take my word on this without checking but I think the trigger angle on an M20 is 84 degrees. If that is correct and yours is set to 97, then you would have 13 degrees less ignition timing than is shown in your timing map and would explain why the power is down so much.

Yep that’s x2. OP verify the angle.

Thank you both for giving me a shimmer of hope. It will at least help me get through the work day faster. I will verify the timing myself and report back.

This would put him at 1° at idle. It should pop and bang all the time.. i request a video of idle with throttle blips. i think your tuna should have heard it somehow it it was that far off. besides that: did he not tune with det cans? i mean, if its 13° off, the tuna could have thrown a lot more advance on it before knock would occure.

So, verified timing (myself) with a light and the toothed wheel settings were indeed FUBAR. It turns out my M20 has the same crank wheel as every other M20. Timing was spot on with advance fixed at 0* and the tooth wheel settings updated to 84*. Big Tuna screwed up verifying timing. I don't know how or why, but thats what happened. I just did a short test drive because a) my tune is clearly not dialed in and b) it was raining. But it is definitely running better throughout the RPM range and making alot more power. We are going to re-tune next Wednesday.

Glad you found it out. Not sure tho, if i would trust a tuna that cant confirm timing :|

hopefully not the same Tuna, it should not matter much if you have an offset as it should have largely been compensated for during the tuning process...
